The Monster & Other Stories was published by Stephen Crane in 1899 to outstanding critical praise. Although not his final work, it would be the last collection of short fiction to be published by Stephen Crane before he became gravely ill. Originally published as a novella in Harper’s Magazine, “The Monster” drew immediate and fiery attention, due to Stephen Crane’s unflinching stare into the face of race and societal relations in New York during the turn of the twentieth century.

The story sets its focus on Henry Johnson, an African American coachman living in a small harbor town, who becomes horribly disfigured while rushing into a blazing fire to save the son of his employer, the town’s physician, Dr. Trescott.

Although beloved by his employer, the people in the small port town begin to view Henry as a monster, unable to separate his physical deformities from his heroic actions. Henry too, must struggle with the terrifying physical persona he is forced to endure for the rest of his life. Race and societal relations become tense as the story unfolds.

Also included in this special edition are the critically acclaimed stories: His New Mittens, and The Blue Hotel.

Meet Julian West, who falls asleep in Boston for over a hundred years… then wakes to find himself in a futuristic socialist utopia, where people retire at 45 to live out the rest of their lives in leisure. His guide in this brave new America is Doctor Leete, with whom he discusses the wonders he encounters and the perils he envisions. These social-minded dialogues range from discussing religion, an improved legal system and class equality, to the use of credit cards, overnight deliveries, and the dangers of the stock market.

Edward Bellamy wrote “Looking Backward” in 1887, and the descriptions of his futuristic socialist utopia quickly ignited spirited debate, and led to a political movement which came to be known as Nationalism. The book also inspired the creation of new utopian communities, as well as influencing over a century of urban planning, including the Garden city movement in England.

This full size collectible edition has been designed for students and scholars, and features a new introduction, as well as a contemporary look at the life and influence of Edward Bellamy. It has been updated, indexed and completely restored for a modern audience.

“It was the sincere belief of even the best of men at that epoch that the only stable elements in human nature, on which a social system could be safely founded, were its worst propensities. They had been taught and believed that greed and self-seeking were all that held mankind together, and that all human associations would fall to pieces if anything were done to blunt the edge of these motives or curb their operation. In a word, they believed – even those who longed to believe otherwise – the exact reverse of what to us seems self-evident; they believed, that is, that the antisocial qualities of men, and not their social qualities, were what furnished the cohesive force of society…. It seems absurd to expect anyone to believe that convictions like these were ever seriously entertained by men….”

“With a tear for the dark past, turn we then to the dazzling future, and, veiling our eyes, press forward. The long and weary winter of the race is ended. Its summer has begun. Humanity has burst the chrysalis. The heavens are before it.”

When it was published as “One Thousand and One Nights”, in the 18th century, there were 12 volumes, totaling more than 2,000 pages.

This full sized, deluxe edition has been restored for a modern audience, and contains the 3 most popular and well known sagas from Arabian Nights, including the complete “Seven Voyages of Sindbad,” “Aladdin and the Magic Lamp,” as well as “Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves”.

Excerpt from The Fifth Voyage of Sindbad:

…Scarcely had they finished their repast, when there appeared in the air, at a considerable distance, two great clouds. The captain of my ship, knowing by experience what they meant, said they were the male and female parents of the roc, and pressed us to re-embark with all speed, to prevent the misfortune which he saw would otherwise befall us.

The two rocs approached with a frightful noise, which they redoubled when they saw the egg broken, and their young one gone. They flew back in the direction they had come, and disappeared for some time, while we made all the sail we could in the endeavor to prevent that which unhappily befell us…

They soon returned, and we observed that each of them carried between its talons an enormous rock. When they came directly over my ship, they hovered, and one of them let go his rock; but by the dexterity of the steersman it missed us and fell into the sea. The other so exactly hit the middle of the ship as to split it into pieces. The mariners and passengers were all crushed to death or fell into the sea. I myself was of the number of the latter; but, as I came up again, I fortunately caught hold of a piece of the wreck, and swimming, sometimes with one hand and sometimes with the other, but always holding fast the plank, the wind and the tide favoring me, I came to an island, and got safely ashore.

I sat down upon the grass, to recover myself from my fatigue, after which I went into the island to explore it. It seemed to be a delicious garden. I found trees everywhere, some of them bearing green and others ripe fruits, and streams of fresh pure water. I ate of the fruits, which I found excellent; and drank of the water, which was very light and good.

This edition will be available for download on Amazon on 8/8/08, which according to the Chinese calendar, will be the luckiest day of the year.

1001 Arabian Nights is a beloved collection of folk tales and other stories. It is often known in English as Arabian Nights from the first English language edition, The Arabian Nights’ Entertainment.

When originally translated and compiled into French by Antoine Galland in 1704, it was known as One Thousand and One Nights. This edition was 12 volumes and contained the first appearance of Aladdin and Ali Baba. Another edition was completed by Sir Richard Francis Burton, called One Thousand and One Nights, and ran to 2,000+ pages, with hundreds of stories and fables.

As the title suggests, this new special edition features the adventures of the most well-known heroes from Arabian Nights, including all seven voyages of Sindbad, the story of Aladdin and his magic lamp, and the tales of Ali Baba and the forty thieves.
